UltiMaker: S3/S5 Head Replacement

Here's a step-by-step guide to removing and reassembling the printhead on your Ultimaker S5 or S3 machine:

Disassembly:

  1. Slide out the clamp clips from underneath the collet.
  2. Press down on the collet and pull up on the tube to release it.
  3. Unscrew the two back screws from the top of the print head.
  4. Remove the cable cover vertically from the printhead.
  5. Apply pressure to the clip on the back of the printhead cable to release it.
  6. Pull out the cable once tension is released from the clip.
  7. Remove the printhead by releasing the clip mechanism.
  8. Move the printhead off-center to avoid catching on the magnet (for S5 machines).
  9. Tilt the plastic blocks to unseat them from the long belts.
  10. Turn the printhead 45 degrees and pull it up and out through the top of the printer.

Assembly:

  1. Slide the long printhead shaft sideways through the printhead.
  2. Slide the shorter printhead shaft back through the front of the printhead.
  3. Tilt the assembly at 45 degrees and slide it back into the printer between the belts.
  4. Ensure the long axis rests on the sliding blocks on the left and right.
  5. Make sure the short axis is between the belts in the front and back.
  6. Push down firmly to seat the blocks into place.
  7. Reseat the printhead cable connector in the back.
  8. Slide the printhead cover into place.
  9. Reinstall the screws.
  10. Push the bowden tubes back into the collets.
  11. Slide the clamp clips back underneath the collets sideways.
  12. If it's a new printhead, run lift switch calibration and XY offset calibration before printing.

Your printhead is now ready for use.
